Background of the study
Cultural festivals have emerged as significant catalysts for economic development by promoting tourism, local crafts, and community engagement. In Lagos State, festivals serve as vibrant expressions of cultural identity while simultaneously generating substantial economic benefits. These events attract both local and international audiences, stimulating growth in hospitality, retail, and creative industries (Olu, 2023). Cultural festivals provide a platform for showcasing local traditions, culinary arts, music, and dance, thereby reinforcing cultural pride and community cohesion. Moreover, they offer opportunities for small businesses and artisans to reach broader markets, fostering economic diversification and resilience. The integration of cultural heritage with economic activities creates a dynamic ecosystem where cultural preservation and economic growth mutually reinforce each other. However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited funding, and inconsistent policy support can undermine the full potential of these festivals as drivers of economic development. This study examines how cultural festivals in Lagos State contribute to economic development, highlighting successful practices and identifying areas for improvement (Adebayo, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the economic potential of cultural festivals in Lagos State, there are significant challenges in leveraging these events for sustained economic development. Issues such as inadequate logistical support, insufficient marketing, and sporadic government backing impede the consistent success of festivals. The disconnect between cultural preservation goals and economic objectives often results in missed opportunities for local economic growth. This study seeks to critically assess the role of cultural festivals in economic development and identify strategies to overcome the existing limitations (Adebola, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the economic impact of cultural festivals in Lagos State.
To identify challenges that hinder the economic potential of these festivals.
To propose strategies for optimizing cultural festivals as platforms for sustainable economic development.
